When and how did you get into art?

 

I became interested in art at a very early age. Some of my most vivid childhood memories are of drawing or painting. Whilst neither of my parents were particularly artistic they did encouraged me, and I can remember them buying me a set of oil paints when I was just eight years old. I had no idea what they were at the time and didn’t understand how to use them properly. But I fell in love instantly with the smell of the linseed oil and from that day on I was hooked. Heavens knows what kind of a mess I must have made with them at the time! 

 

What are your influences?

 

The influences which have informed my work throughout my creative lifetime are numerous and eclectic. Suffice to say any attempt at a comprehensive list would include painters, musicians, writers, architects, and the natural world. 

 

 

What is your subject matter?

 

My work is subjective and autobiographical. The observations I make, my sentient experiences and the resultant images of an exterior world are no more than an exploration of my own consciousness and my relationship with things, places, time and others.

 

How would you describe your style?

 

My approach is unsophisticated and oscillates between the clumsily figurative and abstract expressionism. For me, engagement with the media and process is far more important than the outcome. Drawing is the foundation of all my work and underpins my practice as a painter.

 

 

What are your futures plans?

 

To continue developing my own practice alongside my teaching contracts and more importantly to remain openminded and responsive to new experiences.

Tracy Hill’s exhibition Terrains is currently on show in The Gallery at Bank Quay House. Working primarily with a range of printmaking methods, both as wall-pieces and installations, Hill’s work is concerned with the idea that we are constantly considering our personal worlds within a wider world of grids and reference points. The works explore different elements of mapping whilst also considering the potential of the new acrylic and digital elements within contemporary printmaking.

 

 

Layering is a strong theme in Hill’s work. To explore this we can take a closer look at…

 

Basement Membrane

'Maps are just one more layer laid down upon thousands of other layers of human geographic history on the surface of the land.'  Richard Long.

 

 

This work is the largest piece in the exhibition Terrains, striking an impressive and immediate first impression through the window of the gallery.

 

It consists of ten panels, printed on either side with layers of mapping, and the narratives that Hill places with them.

 

Cut out pathways trace through these maps to create new routes through Hill’s existing world, and suggests our constant re-evaluation of our world and surroundings, and the many layers of mapping that have gathered on top of each other through history, depositing on top of the world’s ancient ‘Basement Membrane’.

 

 

Liminal Territories

‘They are not maps to navigate your way through the landscape to save time; they are maps to help you find space and discover time.’ Tracy Hill.

This work consists of two wall pieces hung slightly away from the wall, allowing light to travel through the cut outs in the work to create shadows; this creates a ‘positive’ presence in the empty or negative space.

Maps are instantly recognisable to us as an orientation tool, even though we may not know where the land is, or if it exists anymore. They suggest to us a history of the stories and geology of our world.

 

In these works, Hill asks the viewer to consider whether these Liminal Territories are ‘intimate transient journeys’, due to the fragility and ephemeral nature of the shadows created by the layers of materials, or simply traditional navigational maps of the land surrounding us.

He helped judge our Photography Open this year and has some of his own work on display in the Pyramid.

Have you exhibited work in Warrington before now?

Yes, I had a solo exhibition in 1985 entitled ‘Unable to Sleep’, a series looking at twilight and nighttime photography in the Museum & Art Gallery. Looking back, it was quite experimental and ahead of its time, as all the work was in colour. It seems strange now, but most photography back then was black and white!

Did you have an involvement in last year’s festival?

Yes, as an exhibiting artist. I submitted a large format photograph that was shown in the Pyramid. The image was made a few years ago and comprised a scene of young women at bus stop in front of the old high-rise collegiate that was then half-demolished!

Have you ever been on a judging panel before?

Yes, in my role as a lecturer in Photography, I have judged work many times. It’s a very privileged position and comes with a lot of responsibility and weight, as so much rides on your decision – especially when you know how much time, effort and commitment people put into their work.

What stood out for you in the prize-winning photographs?

The quality of all the submissions on show was really high and both of the prize-winners’ work stood out for many reasons.

For me, Terry Johnson’s ‘Unnatural Environments: the monkey house’ was very sophisticated. Not only compositionally, but it also possessed a wry comment and message that allowed the viewer to interpret the picture on many levels. Simultaneously it was humorous, with the confused expressions of the on-lookers’ faces peering through the glass somehow mimicking that of the ape’s expression in the tree.

Alan Fletcher’s ‘All Tied Up’ was also a greatly admired image. I particularly liked how effective and bold the image was. Using only an iPhone and an Instagram app to super-saturate the colours of the ropes and chains, he created a compelling effect that  looked painterly. His easy-to-use approach proved that stunning photography can be made in conjunction with a good idea and vision.

Why should people come and see our Photography Open exhibition?

It is inspirational in its breadth and reflects modern, contemporary themes that underpin how the world looks when it is photographed. The exhibition has been beautifully laid out, and purposely groups and contrasts each individual artist’s take on the themes of landscapes, documentary, social commentary and wildlife photography. In essence, something for everyone, young and old!

Chester, Cheshire.

How did you hear about the festival?

I’m on the mailing list, having been to see last year’s exhibition by Kate Bufton. Her ‘Book Sculptures’ were excellent and really inspiring.

What does it mean to you to be a prize-winner?

I’m thrilled to be a prize-winner. It goes to show that hard work, belief in yourself as a photographer, along with a keen eye for what is all around us pays off.

Where was ‘All tied up’ taken?

This image was taken on the Barbican in Plymouth, early one August morning this year. I was delighted to see the textures and colours which surrounded the marine bollard. The origin of the word ‘bollard’ comes from the Middle English and old Norse word for ‘tree trunk’. How ironic that the marine bollard shows signs of ageing that would be similar to that found on the trunk of a tree.

Do you have a working ‘method’?

Not really, I take what I like. Art and photography is very subjective. So I just shoot when I see something that interests me.

What does a typical day off involve?

Travelling to interesting places, ensuring my camera comes along too.

Who is your favourite photographer?

Joe Cornish.

What inspires you?

Positive people, atmospheric places and European travel.

Tell us something few people know about you.

I enjoy visiting Germany as often as possible, enjoying the culture and lifestyle it provides.

Where are you from?

St Helens, Merseyside. My wife and I have been living in Warrington for just over two years.

How did you hear about the festival?

Twitter. Many of my art opportunities have come via Twitter.

What does it mean to you to be a prize-winner?

Affirmation/validation of my experimental technique.

What can we expect from your solo exhibition next year?

I hope to further the technique using nails, so more of the same but with a few surprises. I am looking forward to the opportunity and the prospect of using nearly half a million nails in it. If all goes well, I am hoping to have enough work to show in 6-7 months.

Where do you create your work?

I work from home, mainly in the conservatory because of the light.

Do you have a working ‘method’?

This is an experimental technique, yet to be perfected, so hopefully it will evolve into a set method – but with variations depending on the subject.

How did ‘Lashes & nails’ come into being?

I always do a pen-and-ink stippled drawing first to see whether the subject matter works, and the drawing of this did seem to. You can only really tell, though, when you are over halfway through nailing.

Who is your favourite artist?

Edward Hopper. If I was to have a painting on my wall, it would be a Hopper.

What inspires you?

The sea/coastline and city architecture, two opposites really. I am going to try to do a seascape soon in nails for the exhibition.

Tell us something few people know about you.

I still like to play video games at 50!

Where else can we see your work?

I have one piece of work on show at the moment and that is my very first piece, ‘The Elephant on a Bed of Nails’. That is in the process of being brought back to store for my exhibition. How did you create your winning entry, ‘What still remains’?

This piece took around four years to complete. It started life as a conventional canvas that I painted, sanded, re-painted. Within the canvas is a piece of metal from an abandoned factory, embedded in plaster and again painted several times. The canvas was buried in the ground for a number of years, occasionally dug up and exposed to various different seasons (you can see the pattern raindrops have left in the surface of the plaster). The idea was that nature would creep into dominance over the work.

It was placed inside a collapsible, framed box and over six months, the UV stabilised hard resin was poured over in carefully measured quantities. The resin sealed the work in an entropic, frozen state so it could deteriorate no further. The resin is a material that would survive the world without us, containing within ‘what still remains’ – a footprint of human interaction, the exact meaning of which has since been lost.

What does it mean to you to be a prize-winner?

Overwhelming, it really is. With the beautiful artwork all around me, to hear my name read out… I didn’t know what was happening and was a bit dazed! It is very encouraging, after spending all the time I do in my studio, questioning what it is I actually do!

How did you hear about the festival?

From a studio mate, Kat Button, who suggested I submit some of my work.

What does a typical day off involve?

I don’t really know what a ‘day off’ is… I suppose I only really switch off when I sleep, which I seem to do less of these days.

Who is your favourite artist?

Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Titian, Schalken. I’m obsessed with the work of the old masters. On the surface, my work couldn’t seem further away from these – but they have more in common with my meaning, mood and representation of a fading religious significance.

What inspires you?

I have a few friends who have so much enthusiasm and energy, I find it infectious. One particular girl has inspired and pushed me further than ever this year. The light just beams from her and her encouragement and love of my work got me here.

Where else can we see your work?

The Chapel Gallery, The Turnpike Gallery, The Hive Gallery (USA) – also at our own ‘Cross Street Arts’ gallery. I welcome anybody to drop by the studio and visit. There are many great artists to see and talk to and there is always plenty coffee and biscuits!

Where are you from?

I’m actually from Warrington, born and bred.

How did you hear about the festival?

I entered two images last year from a body of work titled  ‘Ki No Mori’ (‘the woods for the trees’) but sadly, they didn’t make it to the final. When I received the email a few months ago for the 2012 competition, I didn’t hesitate to enter again.

What does it mean to you to be a prize-winner?

A cliché, I know, but what a feeling! I have been waiting for a break like this for over six years and it’s great that my home town is where it has happened.

Where do you create your work?

On paper, in a journal, to begin with. Research and knowledge make great foundations for my ‘bodies’ of work.

Where was ‘the monkey house’ taken?

It was taken at Chester Zoo as part of a university project that explored captivity through captive animals and their ‘unnatural environments’.

Do you have a working ‘method’?

I plan ahead as much as possible and try to pre-visualise the final outcome as best I can.

What does a typical day off involve?

My biggest passion is travel so I usually have my head in a Lonely Planet book!

What inspires you?

Anything and everything! My photography is quite eclectic and includes wildlife and environmental photography, photojournalism, travel and documentary photography. In a nutshell, travelling and experiencing cultures different than my own is what inspires me – and the people I meet along the way.

Tell us something few people know about you.

I have recently started to collect vintage and antique corkscrews. I’ll get some grief for that from my mates!!!

St George’s House, in the town centre, has undergone a £1.5 million refurbishment and has just re-opened.

The landmark building, once a Co-op haberdashery and latterly an NHS Prescription Authority building, had fallen into disrepair.

But business and council bosses believe its regeneration symbolises a brighter future for the town centre.

The building, at the junction of St George’s Road and Bridge Street, was officially reopened yesterday to about 150 guests.

Its old Edwardian elevator, complete with decorative metal work and original glazing, has been uncovered after years behind grotty hardboard.

The site was bought by Python Properties last winter and regeneration work started in February.

Yesterday’s launch signalled the start of a marketing campaign aimed at businesses, art groups and the public, who are welcome at its bistro.

Python Properties has carried out similar projects in other northern towns, from Warrington to Middlesbrough, for 15 years.

Peter Broom, a Python partner, said: “We specialise in historic buildings that are dilapidated, run-down, obsolete or vacant.

“St George’s House has a resonance for Bolton people but it was a mess when we arrived. So we’ve restored its lovely windows and high interiors, giving it an airy, light atmosphere.”“We had great success with regenerating a 1970s building in Warrington, Bank Quay House, along similar lines with offices, cafe and gallery.

Co-partner Martin Johnson added: “Too many offices are soulless.

We have manned receptions, an art curator and cafe.

“We encourage business events, and welcome the public to the gallery and cafe. Art exhibitions will change regularly to attract people back and encourage community use.

“The foyer events area can be used for free by tenants or be booked for special events.”

Keith Davies, Bolton Council’s head of economic development and regeneration, said the transformation of St George’s House reflected other progress in Bolton despite the recession.

He added: “To have seen this building empty for so long disappointed many people.

“It’s got a fantastic history and its great to see it come back to life.”

A New Conversation

 

As part of its long awaited grand opening on Saturday the 16th June The Gallery At St George’s House, Bolton, will proudly present five of the finest local contemporary artists on its newly dried walls.

The five handpicked artists, Jason Simpson, Scott Devon, Ross Davis, Margaret Jackson and David Jackson, who comprise both written and visual artists have all been collaborating at the neo:studios.  Artists will be showcasing brand new work created especially for the new creative space housed in the newly re-vamped heritage building located behind the Marketplace on St. George's Road.

Expect an eclectic exciting mix ranging from painting, drawing, and sculpture to flash fiction and poetry, a mix that is designed to both stimulate and fascinate visitors.  

The gallery is free to enter and we have a very friendly onsite coffee shop serving drinks and lunches all day. We hope you can join us on the launch weekend to welcome this new creative space to Bolton, dedicated to celebrating the work of local and regional artists.

The Federation supports the work of 17 member societies in the North West via the expertise, experience and know-how of appointed representatives, and by financial support within the North West area.

L.S. Lowry was one of founders of NWFAS which began in 1954 to develop and support the work of leisure painters. 

This exhibition will show around 50 artworks chosen by the Federation themselves from 10 different societies in the North West. Original artwork will be available to purchase.

Cheshire Artists unite for ‘Palm House’ Exhibition

 ‘Palm House’ is an exhibition by fourteen, Cheshire based, textile artists and designers who will be bringing together a glorious range of artworks this Winter at The Gallery At Bank Quay House, Warrington.

Each individual artist has been inspired by the original and magnificent splendour of The Palm House at Sefton Park, Liverpool.  Using intriguing techniques with vibrant colours and sumptuous fabrics the exhibition will interest and delight audiences alike.

The gallery is located just opposite the Golden Gates, entry is free and open Mon-Fri 9-5pm, Sat 10-4pm.  Exhibition continues until 1st February 2012.

As part of Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival, The Gallery At Bank Quay House will be displaying an exhibition of book arts and paper craft by local artist Kate Bufton. 

Kate’s work is an ongoing developmental exploration, manipulating the shape and form of old books. 
By altering the original form, through various cuts and folds they are beautifully transformed from a carrier of text to an object that may be admired.

This FREE exhibition will open on Sat 24 September 10.30am in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival 2011.

We are also giving you the unique chance to meet Kate on Wednesday 26 October 6-8pm

We are looking for artists, and performers to join us in delivering Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival 2011.

Engaging the community with the Cultural Quarter, this month long event will celebrate the wealth of artistic talent within the region. Following on from the success of recent exhibitions such as (R)Evolution and Elbow Toe at Warrington Museum & Art Gallery, the festival will highlight the growing support and interest in contemporary arts in and around Warrington from the performing and visual arts sector. 

The festival will see exhibitions, a public art trail, performances and displays of a wide range of contemporary arts at various venues including; Warrington Museum & Art Gallery, The Gallery At Bank Quay House and Pyramid & Parr Hall.  We see the festival as an event that will promote all creatives in the region so your participation is key in making the festival a success!  We hope the festival will become an annual event on Warrington’s arts scene.

We are seeking local artists working across visual media, performance, creative writing and music to get involved during the festival.  Using Warrington Museum & Art Gallery’s current exhibition ‘Inspired To…’ as a starting point we are looking for exciting artworks and projects that inspire and communicate a message of one of the following themes; Journeys, Love, Music and Seasons.

In this exhibition we show a selection of pictures made by our members over the last 125 years

In 1886, some 47 years after Louis Dagerre and William Fox Talbot invented the first photographic processes, a group of enthusiasts met to form a Photographic Society with the aim of improving photography amongst it’s members. The Society was called The Warrington Amateur Photographic Society and it’s first President was Mr J.T.Down, Secretary and Managing Director of the Wilderspool Brewery.

In the early days photographs were taken on glass slides for projection. The Society has a large collection of slides from these days which cover summer trips by the Society, seaside holidays taken at the turn of the twentieth centaury by some of it’s more wealthy members. Perhaps the most interesting collection “ Slumming with a Hand Camera” a title considered not politically correct today, was described as “depicting Local Scenes in that part of the town not generally frequented by the amateur photographer”.
Developments in photographic techniques and materials saw the growth of monochrome printing alongside projected slides and the first exhibitions of prints were held.

The war years severely restricted photographic activities, added to that was a scarcity of photographic materials. The post war period saw a boom in membership driven by the growing popularity of 35 mm film and affordable 35mm single lens reflex cameras.

By the late 1960’s colour printing became possible for the amateur photographer. Printing was an exacting task requiring seven separate processing stages and accurate time and temperature control and was attempted only by highly skilled darkroom workers. In the 1980’s however simplified colour processing became available and colour printing started to surpass monochrome printing.

In 1986 the Society, boosted by a buoyant membership, celebrated it’s centenary and looked forward confidently to the future. By the late 1990’s however, Warrington Photographic Society in line with similar societies saw a decline in membership and a lack of interest in photography, particularly amongst the upcoming generation.

The digital revolution burst upon photography leading to a renewed interest and growing membership. By now the vast majority of members use digital cameras to tackle traditional subjects along with the opportunity offer by digital technology to push photography in to more creative realms.

As we progress through our second centaury we hope that there will be people still willing to associate together with the common cause of making pictures.
