Current Exhibition

We would cordially like to invite you to the Private Viewing of Hinterland by Stephen Gill on Friday 14th October, 6-8.30pm.

Specially commissioned for the Centenary year of the Iconic Transporter Bridge, Stephen Gills photographs are being shown for the first time in a series of exhibitions. His work explores, engages and maps the ever changing landscape that the transporter inhabits.

This exhibition at pythongallery investigates how the space in and around the bridge was used in the past, how it is being used now and how it could be used in the future.

Taking the viewer on a journey through public and private, familiar and unfamiliar transit areas, roads and pathways, to and from the bridge the combination of colour and monochrome images focus on the often overlooked spaces on both sides of the river and encourage a re-examination of this hinterland.

It is a powerful show that shows the familiar in new ways and the history of the area in a contemporary way.

Refreshments will be served from 6pm, so please come along and help us celebrate the opening of this powerful exhibition.

Stephen's work can also be seen at the following exhibitions:

This exhibition showcases Franks beautiful, complex and involved abstract paintings which are compellingly linked to his passion for music; they describe in his own idiosyncratic pictorial and gestural language the ways in which music informs and transforms our creative existence.

In the artists' words:

Somewhere Else

Some forms of music have the power of taking us somewhere else. The paintings in this exhibition all have strong links with music which, for me, have this quality. The paintings are based on pieces I have known over a long period of time so that I know them very well and they have had time to work on me.

In making these paintings I am not primarily trying to illustrate anything (although sometimes figurative elements do emerge) but rather to try to find pictorial equivalents to the musical language. Links between music and painting already exist – there is a shared vocabulary – composition, colour, texture, tonality etc.

Composers whose work I have used include Mahler, Ives, Varese, Martinu, Berg, Tippett, Nielsen, Stravinsky, Webern. In some cases the painting is a response to the whole piece, in others to a section of the work - sometimes just a few bars.

Miranda Richmond studied Fine Art in Bristol from 1977-80 after initially training as a nurse. In 1983 she moved to the North-East and has lived 17 years in Middlesbrough.

Statement
This area provides an inspiring range of subject matter for a primarily landscape painter, from the Yorkshire moors and dales to the coast and industrial landscape of Teesside. The majority of my painting is undertaken outdoors in the landscape, often working on series from one location over a period of many months through different seasons, weathers and times of day, and in a variety of media. However  I do not see my painting as about the transitory effects of different lights, rather I seek for an underlying structure inherent in the subject.
Recent painting trips have included visits to Sweden, Spain, Egypt and several to Scotland.
In 1979 I met and later married the painter Miles Richmond, who was for me an influential teacher and colleague. Miles died in 2008.
While painting has been my almost constant activity over the years I have also taught in Adult Education, on Summer Schools for the University of Hertfordshire degree course (at East Rounton) and have organized and facilitated many arts activities and workshops. From 2002 to 2007 I worked for the North of England Refugee Service as support and community worker. Working with people has always been for me an important complementary element in the very solitary activity of landscape painting.
Family commitments have recently taken me to Buckinghamshire where some of the most recent works in this exhibition were made.

We would like to invite you to attend the Private View of an exhibition of work by the acclaimed artist Barrie West, Friday 24th June, 5:30 -8:30pm at pythongallery. (Please see attached e-invite and information).

Barrie West's work deals with issues of identity, memory and how the self is inextricably linked to our own personal, yet universal histories. Whether depicted through the medium of print, paint and colour or through conceptual, installation or performance pieces the idiosyncratic and mercurial nature of Barrie West's vision energises each piece of work.

Often playful, often serious the images are ablaze with colour and intricate detail allowing multiple readings built up through a laborious process of screen printing many layers and then applying various mixed media, with each work taking around six months to complete.

Included in this show is the first public exhibition of the installation work 'The Grand Illusion'. The work has provoked controversy, initially planned to be exhibited on Tyneside it was removed from exhibition because of its critical concerns with homelessness and the disenfranchised.

More information on Barrie can be found at http://www.barriewest-artist.co.uk/

It is an amazing and thought provoking exhibition, so please come along this friday.

The Private View will also feature Music and Readings from-

Sheila Wakefield - The Red Squirrel Press

Ani Sandwith - Keyboard and vocals

                                          James Oates - Performance poetry

                                          Ian Horn -  Performance poetry

Refreshments will be served from 5:30.

 Hope to see you there!
