On Saturday 10th March at 1-3pm, we are pleased to launch the exhibition, ‘Cleveland Through the Eye of a Needle’ by The Embroiderers Guild of Guisborough and District.
It is an amazing collection of work by eighteen members of the guild, showcasing the creative skills and outstanding technical abilities of the included artists.
The show is thematically linked by the subject of the title and a non-linear narrative that responds to the environments, landscapes, wildlife and architectures old and new, that makes up our immediate region.
Through a diverse application of materials, traditional and otherwise, the exhibition illustrates the enduring and evolving nature of textiles which goes far beyond its often perceived ‘craft’ label.
This is work that is visually engaging and dexterously produced that touches on many themes through many techniques; embroidery, felting, collage and mixed media, to list only a few. It is familiar but also challenging to the perception of what fine art can be, and it is truly stunning.
Guisborough and District Embroiderers Guild
The Embroiderers Guild exists to build awareness of stitch and textile art.
The Guisborough Branch began in 1982 with 20 members and now has 35. There are still a few people who have been members since its inauguration.
We hold monthly meetings usually with a speaker on the first Saturday of the month and have a morning workshop on the 2nd Monday. We also have occasional day schools, spending a day with a textile artist learning new skills.
Everyone is welcome and we try to cater for all abilities and tastes. All you need is an interest.
We have the title of ‘Guild’ but embroidery has changed greatly over the years and as can be seen by the exhibits, embroidery is diverse and exciting.
