Local photographic artist David Griffiths captures and explores the powerful aspects of perspective, symmetry and fractal geometry within architecture and nature.
His works are a blend of true representation and stylistic interpretation using the visual language of photography as an expressive art form.

Northern Inspiration

Trained as a Painter/Printmaker, Bob Watson enjoyed a successful and rewarding career as a teacher in Secondary and Further Education as well as a variety of In-Service and Adult Education programmes and workshops. His work with students of all ages and backgrounds always reflected the strong commitment to his own creative practice and strong belief in the vital importance of creativity and design awareness.
Since retiring from full-time teaching as Head of Creative Studies at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, Bob Watson has continued to produced paintings and large-scale murals for schools, industry and public areas. His fascination with drawing and print media finds appropriate subject-matter in the northern seascape/landscape and the powerful forms of Durham Cathedral, Newcastle, Whitby and the heavy engineering and historic ship restoration for which the region is well known.
He has exhibited in one-man and group exhibitions throughout the northern region over many years and is represented in numerous public and private collections including Hartlepool Borough Council, Cleveland County, Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station, Huntsman Tioxide Chemicals, Camerons Brewery Ltd. and the Hartlepool Renaissance Collection.
The opening offers a great opportunity to meet Bob and ask any questions you may have about the work on display over drinks and nibbles.

Launching with a private view on Thursday 28th February 2019, 5-7pm “Beyond Graduation” promises to be an exciting and eclectic exhibition, bringing together 29 artists that have graduated from Teesside University since 2007:
What started off as a conversation at a previous exhibition opening, “Beyond Graduation” became a curious and provocative proposal for a diverse display. Hugely lead by the talented artist Julie Macbean, this exhibition will bring together 29 individual arts graduates – all with their own unique style and technique, to showcase their work & demonstrate how it has developed and progressed since their education at Teesside University.

“In The Valley of The Tees”
Darlington Association of Photographers
“In The Valley of the Tees” is a huge area ranging from its source in the Pennines to its estuary on Teesside, encompassing areas as far north as Hartlepool to Staithes in the south – passing through a variety of countrysides, towns and villages, each with their own distinctive flavour.
For their 6th anniversary as part of the DAP, photographers have been given free rein to express themselves using visual language no matter what the media or process involved.
Exhibition runs until Friday 22nd February 2019.

Angels & Engineers

Photography has always been a part of Hugh’s life. Since the early years when he ‘borrowed’ his father’s camera and used up all his film – photographing his model trains! Growing up, Hugh worked in black & white film and then made the inevitable move to colour digital. He packed away his attic darkroom, but still retained his love of monochrome.
Hugh says:
“Having spent my career as an engineer, I started to look at ways in which I could capture the skills and environment of engineers working in our area. I have been fortunate to be given access to businesses, both large and small. The people I have met have been friendly, knowledgeable and usually spiced with a good helping of wit!
Photographically, there are considerable technical challenges in this project and I hope the small selection of images shows a few of the enterprises and the people who work in them, in a favourable light.
The theme of Angels came about by chance while I was walking through Saltburn Cemetery and was immediately struck by the combination of strength and poignancy from one of the statues. I have tried to show – always in a respectful way – photos which capture the unique mood of such places.
A third theme I have explored and included in this exhibition is Urbex (urban exploration), which is a distinctive branch of photography and in it’s purest form is for the brave and bold. My take on Urbex is more measured and I’ve been given access to various places in and around Middlesbrough where the decaying interiors have their own colour palette and interest.”

The Heritage Gallery presents – The Cleveland Art Society Winter Exhibition.
Our region’s original and authentic art group, which proceeded all others and created the model for future groups to follow, used to reserve the end of year calendar slot for their Annual Exhibition. It was sometimes known as the Winter Exhibition. For decades, The Cleveland Art Society seemed to make this their favoured event. They would often stage smaller shows of work at other times of the year, but the “Annual” or “Winter” exhibitions were major draws and of course invariably would encourage a few purchases. The present Art Society is delighted to land at the Heritage Gallery to resume their idea of a winter show throughout the month of November and promises, as usual, a special treat for the admirers of that inescapable art form – painting.

“Lifeline” by
Margaret Smith
Margaret Smith celebrates her 80th birthday with her eclectic solo exhibition “Lifeline” at The Heritage Gallery.
After starting her career in Local Government, at the Health Department in Middlesbrough, Margaret went on to passing her City & Guilds course in Fashion and landed her first job in teaching Dressmaking. From there her love of textiles and textures grew, teaching Mixed Crafts and expanding her skills at Middlesbrough College. Until Eventually she found what she was looking for. Margaret found herself immersed in a glorious range of techniques, textures and materials when she started doing her City & Guilds Embroidery course. And on the strength of her embroideries, Margaret was offered an exhibition at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, leading to the design and production of (with the help of friends) the “Captain Cook Panels”.
Margaret continued to teach at Middlesbrough College in the Textiles department, producing her own work and experimenting with her love of painting too.
This exhibition provides snippets into the life, love and passion of Margaret Smith’s 80 years and The Heritage Gallery is delighted to display this array of vibrant and inspiring work throughout August and September.
Exhibition runs until Friday 21st September 2018.

5pm until 7pm
Kevin has always been attracted to colour, which lead him into the profession of painter and decorator. He then went onto becoming a painter of pictorial signs for public houses. Now retired, Kevin is a member of three local art societies and paints at home as often as time allows. He has won two national art competitions, one for his vibrant painting of the Cochrane’s furnaces, and enjoys painting colourful and detailed scenes of the local area.
We do hope you can join us for the opening, which offers a great opportunity to meet Kevin and ask any questions you may have about the work displayed.
Refreshments will be provided by the wonderful Iron Co Coffee House during the opening

Hazel Dixon experiments with rust as a method of addressing problems in the local community, focusing her work on the steel industry in Redcar, which has now closed down and has rendered many people unemployed and poverty stricken. She aims to explore the issue by creating art that represents what the industry means to people and also what it is today. Hazel uses steel plates that are covered in rusted images of the industrial plants and collapsed habitations of Teesside. She says “I have chosen to create dark, grungy pieces of art, to represent the struggle of the working class people living in the UK and the feelings people have about the demise of the steel industry within the local community”.
